What to know about IFRA Guideline updates

by Lebermuth, on Feb 09, 2021

The Lebermuth Company has always maintained compliance with the current IFRA (International Fragrance Association) standards and guidelines. On January 10th, 2020, IFRA notified fragrance houses of revised guidelines that were implemented and released as the IFRA 49th Amendment. These updates include many new and important regulations that affect how The Lebermuth Company formulates fragrances for use in consumer goods and products.

You can find the current IFRA documents on Lebermuth’s online regulatory portal (click here) by searching with the Lebermuth item number(s). We recommend that  you review the IFRA 49 documentation for your fragrances to determine if your product formulations fall within the recommended range of use. If you are having difficulty or are unable to locate the IFRA 49 documents you need, please contact your Account Executive or Customer Service Team Member for assistance.

In your assessment of the IFRA 49 Statement, you will need to consider the following critical factors in the formulation of your products:

  • Check the third column marked “Product Application” to find which category your product application falls into
  • The second column suggests “Level of Use” which is the maximum amount of fragrance recommended for use in that product application. It is not the “recommended” usage level but the highest or maximum level of fragrance/blend that is supported by the new IFRA 49th recommendations
  • If your current usage level is equal to or falls below the “Level of Use” next to your application, there are no changes necessary
  • If your current usage level is higher than the “Level of Use”, please contact your Account Executive or Customer Service Team Member for further assistance

As a member of IFRA, the Lebermuth Company is required to supply blends that meet current IFRA 49 requirements by May 10th, 2022. Our customers, however, are not subject to the compliance deadlines set by IFRA and may exhaust their existing stock of fragrances. We strongly recommend that you conclude your assessment of all current fragrances in use by December 31st, 2021. This will allow ample time for any necessary revisions to be completed, as well as provide adequate time to test and review any new or reformulated fragrance blends.
