Top 3 Beverage Trends of 2017

Written by Lebermuth | Mar 24, 2017

When it comes to the top trending beverage trends of 2017, beverages that are Hot & Spicy or that include Coconut or Turmeric are at the top of the list.

Coconut

Using coconut in beverages has gained popularity due to its nutritious properties and versatility. As a result of its high amount of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), it not only increases the amount of calories you can burn, but also has an appetite reducing effect. The saturated fats in coconut oil are known to increase HDL (or the “good”) cholesterol and convert LDL (or the “bad”) cholesterol into a less harmful form. Studies have shown that the consumption of MCTs resulted in immediate improvement in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The great thing about the coconut is that it offers many health benefits while being versatile. The most popular consumption methods are coconut milk, water and oil. Since its flavor has subtle and sweet, nutty undertones, it is a perfect complement to various beverages.

Interested in how you can incorporate coconut into your diet? Next time you visit your local Starbucks, request that the barista add coconut milk to your favorite latte. Instead of milk, add coconut water to your next smoothie to save on calories. For more of a tropical twist, add coconut oil to your homemade piña colada.

Turmeric

Turmeric, or “The New Ginger”, has been used in India for many years as a spice and medicinal herb. The health benefits are that it clears the skin, is a metabolism booster, a natural pain killer, antidepressant, reduces the risk of cancer and has anti-inflammatory properties!

Curious about giving turmeric a try? Start your day by adding turmeric to your morning cup of coffee. Give your workout and weight loss efforts a boost by adding it to your green juice or pre-workout smoothie. For a relaxing after dinner drink, add turmeric to a cup of hot chocolate or tea.

Hot & Spicy

After Beyoncé revealed how she quickly lost weight by participating in The Master Cleanse, a liquid diet that is lemonade with cayenne pepper, the trend of adding spice to beverages has continued to gain popularity and even more so in 2017. The nutritional benefits of consuming spicy food include weight loss, cancer prevention and a healthy heart. Capsaicin, the active ingredient found in jalapenos and cayenne pepper, is known to lower cholesterol and block the gene that narrows the arteries, thus increasing blood flow in the vessels.

Next time you visit your favorite neighborhood bar, ask if they are featuring spicy drinks. Distillers are creating pepper-infused spirits like Absolut Peppar and Tanteo Jalapeno Tequila. If they don’t have any spicy spirits, then request a sangria or margarita with a cayenne pepper rim. Or infuse your own vodka or tequila with garlic, habanero peppers, or even wasabi!

Given the health benefits and versatility of these trendy beverage add-ins, the next time you visit your favorite bar or coffee shop, why not give one of these a try to kick things up a notch?
