The oral care market is booming due to increasing interest in personal hygiene and wellness since the pandemic. Spotting a new product opportunity, French probiotic skincare brand Gallinée has launched a probiotic oral care range to help balance the mouth’s microbiome and support its natural ecosystem.

Traditional oral care products kill up to 100% of bacteria in the mouth, yet Gallinée’s range is designed with prebiotics and gentle polishing clays to support the beneficial bacteria. It includes a 95% natural Prebiotic Toothpaste (£12/$17), which strengthens good bacteria, neutralizes plaque, and prevents cavities. Meanwhile, the Mouth & Microbiome Supplement tablets (£17/$24) contribute to the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes and ‘feed good’ gut bacteria, while ensuring fresh breath.

Both products are formulated with natural prebiotic xylitol, which targets the bacteria responsible for tooth decay, reduces acid production, and increases oral-balancing salivary flow.

The oral care category has gained fresh attention during the pandemic, as limited access to dental surgeries as well as increased fears over bacteria and virus transmissions have driven new product opportunities. Ireland-based Spotlight Oral Care saw 30% week-on-week sales growth at American beauty retailer Ulta Beauty during the first five weeks of lockdown in the US (Spotlight Oral Care, 2020), signifying the rise in consumers who are optimizing their at-home dental care routines.

As highlighted in The Bacteria Beauty Boom, the microbiome and probiotics market has shifted into the mainstream, as brands embrace microbiome-friendly ingredients targeting optimum health. “If we look at the skin, the antibacterial mentality is changing very fast, so I expect the same thing to happen in oral care quite soon,” Gallinée founder Marie Drago told cosmetics news source Cosmetics Design Europe. “It’s a massive opportunity for microbiome brands.”
